Equine Wellness program

Wellness

Reata Equine wants to be the team leader for the health care and wellness of your horse.
Our wellness program offers you a variety of services at a reasonable price.

A managed wellness program is an important tool for prevention of unnecessary illness and expense. These days it takes an entire team to care for your horse - i.e. your veterinarian, your farrier, perhaps a barn manager or trainer, the feed salesman and you.

The cornerstone of our program is the physical exam. During the physical exam, our doctors will thoroughly examine your horse's mouth, eyes, ears, legs, heart, lungs, and evaluate intestinal motility. At this time we also watch him trot to check for lameness, evaluate nutrition, body condition, and environment. During the exam you will have the opportunity to express any concerns you may have and ask the doctor questions. We will then administer vaccinations, deworm your horse if seasonally appropriate, and collect samples for any needed laboratory tests.

Spring visit typically includes:

  • Complete Physical Exam
  • Sleeping Sickness vaccine
  • Tetanus Vaccine
  • West Nile Vaccine
  • Influenza Vaccine
  • EHV-1Vaccine
  • Deworming with Ivermectin and Praziquantel
  • Blood work as needed
  • Fecal exam as needed

Fall Visit typically includes:

  • Complete Physical Exam
  • Influenza Vaccine
  • Rabies
  • EHV-1 Vaccine
  • Fecal Exam

Our Philosophy

In the past horse owners wormed horses multiple times during the year with strong over the counter drugs without knowing if their horses have worms or not.  With the emerging blood worm resistance problems, Reata is now  minimizing the deworming we recommend and instituting a fecal examination to more completely tailor the drugs we use to control the parasites in your horse.  Hopefully this approach will limit the unnecessary deworming chemicals in the environment and limit the blood worm resistance by using only those medications that are necessary for your horse.

At this time we do not recommend routine vaccination for Potomac Horse Fever, Strep equi (strangles) or botulism.

Pima County has more rabies incidence than all the other Arizona counties combined.  With the prevalence of the virus in the wildlife population, your horse is at risk if not vaccinated properly.  We recommend yearly vaccination with a product approved for use in horses.  The disease is controlled by state authorities because it can be transmitted to people.  For this reason the regulatory agencies will only recognize vaccinations against rabies that were given by a licensed veterinarian.
