Eye problems in horses

Indications:

Closed swollen eye, evidence of pain such as squinting, discharge, greying of the normally clear and transparent cornea.

First aid:   Apply warm compress and clean discharge from face.  Use a fly mask to keep insects away and protect the eye from the sun, shavings, and hay.  Place in a dark stall if possible.   Warning:  Take care in placing any medication in the eye without checking with the vet as some medications will worsen some eye problems.

Information for theVet:   Describe eye, especially if there is any discharge or discoloration of the cornea. Request the animal be seen that day.
